I'm insane, you're insane, we're all insane for DEBATE!

Below are my thoughts on another FAQ. "If someone is insane, can they know they are insane?" I decided it would be best to display them in the form of an argument.

Dude#1: I don't think they would know that they are insane, because insane people do many odd things and think they are normal, so how would they know?

Dude#2: You have a good point, but what if someone is insane only some of the time. We have no evidence that insane people have no sane thoughts. They could possibley just chose not to voice them.

Dude#1: Let's just say that you're right, but we find an insane person who speaks sane thoughts sometimes, and one of those thoughts happens to be admitting that they get crazy sometimes. That type of thought is very sane. So, then what?

Dude#2: Are you saying that if an insane person admits that they may be insane, really means that they aren't insane?

Dude#1: Yea... no. What I'm saying is that this insane person who admits they are insane is really insane, but they have some sane thoughts. Because if someone admits that they are insane, and that is a sane thought, that means that the sane part of the person knows that they are insane, and so they probably are.

Dude#2: Yes, but what if the insane person, who has some sanity, really isn't sane at all! Maybe this insane person is so insane that they think they are insane. Because if an insane person who says they are insane has some sane thought, then that sane part must be sane enough to realize that they aren't insane, they just think they are, which leads me to my next statement.

Dude#1: Well, how can you be so sure of that? This sane person could actually be lying just so people think they are insane.

Dude#2: But wouldn't only an insane person lie? Especially about something so obscure like that. Or, when a sane person who isn't insane thinks they are insane, they really aren't being sane. If that person really was sane, then they wouldn't question their sanity, and therefore they must be insane for thinking that.

Dude#1: So, you're saying that people who question sanity are insane?

Dude#2: Yes.

Dude#1: Oh, gee, thanks a lot!

Dude#2: What?

Dude#1: You just called us insane!

Dude#2: ...
